Tour Overview

 

Mongolian Gobi is the birthplace of dinosaurs. Bayanzag ( also known as Flaming cliffs) , is located in Umnugovi province. Bayanzag, with its unique natural formation, is a 20-50 meter high steep cliff. The site looks like burning under sunset. In 1920, a team  led by a American scientist named Roy Chapman Andrews discovered dinosaur fossils in Bayanzag. The nest with dinosaur eggs was found for the first time and it proved  to human that dinosaurs lay eggs.  Yoliin Am  forms a gorge that is so deep and so narrow, that only two persons can pass in some places. The water forms four small waterfalls. Although the sun shines a lot in this region, the canyon remains dark, so that in the bottom, a part of the river remains nearly all year long covered by a thick layer of ice.The canyon named by bearded vulture, Yol bird in Mongolian. 


You can climb sand dunes, ride Bactrian camel in Gobi Three Beauty National park.  You`ll visit historic sites from 13th century and Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape –UNESCO World Heritage Centre which includes Kharkhorum, the 13th century capital of Great Mongolian Empire. Monglolia is famous for being the homeland of Chinggis Khaan. The Orkhon valley has a rich cultural heritage, such as burial mounds, rare and precious monuments, inscribed monuments, inscriptions and archaeological findings that vividly show the culture of pastoral nomads from ancient times. 


Erdene Zuu Monastery, ”Jewel Temple”, was built in the 16th century. It’s certainly the oldest Buddhist monastery of Mongolia and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the category “cultural landscape of Orkhon Valley”. Erdenezuu Monastery was built on the site of the old Mongolian capital Kharakhorum using some of the building materials of the ruined city Today, Erdene Zuu remains an active Buddhist monastery, and at the same time a museum open to travelers.This destination offers you a good walk around its area visiting the temples. Furthermore, you can also visit the Kharkhorin Museum with findings from the ancient capital.


Mongolia is home to the Mongolian wild horse known as a Przewalski horse (takhi).  Takhi horse is last truly wild horse.In 1992 wild horses were successfully reintroduced in Hustai mountains. You can see deer, ibex, marmosets and birds of pray in Hustai NP.

Detailed tour itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Ulaanbaatar - Ikh Gazriin Chuluu Nature Reserve

Arrival in Ulaanbaatar, our guide and driver will meet you at the airport or train station. Today we drive from Ulaanbaatar to Ikh Gazriin Chuluu Nature Reserve, close to Mandalgovi. Ikh Gazriin Chuluu is one of many fascinating places in Mongolia. It  is a mountain of granite rock in the Gobi desert with a peak of 1706m high. These rocky mountains are situated in Gurvansaikhan sum of Dundgovi aimag. They spread out from west to east covering about 20 kilometers. There are many interesting stories about local historic people who had lived or had been hidden in caves from the royalties of that time in Ikh Gazriin Chuluu. These caves are usually named after those people. It has a rich family of plants and is a home to many wild animals. There has a open theatre of national Long song of Mongolia.You can do rock climbing, trekking, hiking and visiting nomadic family. Overnight stay  in a ger camp.(L, D)

Day 2 Ikh Gazriin Chuluu Nature Reserve - Bayanzag /Flaming cliffs /

Drive to Bayanzag. Bayanzag or Flaming Cliffs is world’s first successful dinosaur excavation by Roy Chapman Andrews, American researcher in 1922, also called as red cliffs. The world’s first dinosaur petrified egg was found here. Scientists define the area was sea in some 200 million years ago. Still now we can easily find small petrified seashells and many interesting rock formations. The area is simply enormous in the evening sunset, feels like you are standing at the crossroads of million years past and the future. The cliffs take reflection of burning yellow sky horizon and looks like landed on a different planet. You have the opportunity to see sensation from the hills and have a beautiful walk. Day 3 Bayanzag /Flaming cliffs -  Yoliin Am

Drive to the Yoliin Am (near Dalanzadgad). Yoliin Am-Vulture Gorge has a rich avifauna of about 240 species in the park. The wildlife in this area is abundant and desert plants are vibrant and varied. This area is situated in the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, which encompasses the 'Three Beauties" peaks and the eastern-most points of the Altai Mountains. Every observer impressed by the silhouttes of the enormous raptors which are often circling in great numbers above the Yoliin Am -Vulture Gorge. if you are luckyyou will hear the cackle of the rare Altai snow cock in the late afternoon. On the walls of the gorge, the unique flapping flight of the wall creeper can frequently be admired. An easily approached species is the red-billed chough, which is not afraid of people.The river in the Yoliin Am-Vulture Gorge builds up a thick layer of ice over the winter months. Here you have the opportunity to climb a glacier. Overnight stay  in a ger  camp. (B,L,D)

Day 4 Yoliin Am - Khongor sand dunes

Drive to Khongor sand dunes.120 km long, up to 8 km wide Khongor sand dunes , also known as the ‘’Singing dunes’’ is one of the top attractions in the Gobi desert. The dunes tower about 300 m above the Gobi desert plain. The locals call the highest dune as a Singing Dune because of the high-pitched airplane engine like sound created by the wind blow over the dune. Climbing the highest dune is a challenge for visitors.You can also do sand boarding. The Noyon and Sevrei mountains lay nearby gorgeous sand dunes, and it`s combination makes fascinating scenery. The Khongor sand dunes probably would be perfect place to ride a camel which is called vehicle of desert. A tour to the Gobi desert is incomplete without a visit to Khongor sand dunes. 

Day 5 Khongor sand dunes- Ongi monastery sightseeing

Drive to Tsagaan Ovoo town. Visit the Ongi monastery. Ongi Monastary is the ruin of a big monastery on the bank of the Ongiin River. Ongi monastery has 28 temples and other buildings on the south slope of the Rocky Mountain like Balsa country and stupas which are not broken. Ongi monastery had about 1000 lamas and it was destroyed during the Stalinist purges in 1930s. Overnight stay  in a ger  camp. (B,L,D)

Day 6 Ongi monastery - Visit ancient capital Kharkhorin

Drive to Kharkhorin which is located in  Orkhon valley, one of biggest and scenery rivers of Mongolia, 380kms from Ulaanbaatar. The city served as the Mongolian capital for over 40 years (until Khubilai Khaan moved it to Beijing). Chinese soldiers later destroyed most of the city in the 14th century.

And the remnants of the town were used to build the ErdeneZuu Monastery in the 16th century.Monastery Erdene Zuu, the first Buddhist monastery in Central Mongolia founded in 1586. Visit museum named Kharkhorin which is beautifully designed and well displayed. Hiking in the Great King`s monument hill  where you can see over the Orkhon Valley.

Day 7 Kharkhorin -  Hustai National Park.

Drive to Hustai national park  to watch Przewalskii horse. The wild horse`s Mongolian name is Takhi which means ‘’spirit of worship’ ’. They are the only wild horse to survive in modern times and they have been reintroduced successfully to their homeland after 40 years of extinction. Hustai NP has diversity of the landscapes, and the variety of wildlife including red deer, corsac foxes, Siberian marmots and other numerous raptors such as black vultures, eagles and falcons. Try to take pictures of those beautiful flora and fauna. Overnight stay in a ger  camp.  (B,L,D)

Day 8 Hustai National Park -Ulaanbaatar

Drive to Ulaanbaatar. After lunch visit the Gandantegchilen  Monastery that is the largest and most famous functioning monastery in Mongolia; here you may experience the monks in worship and see housing a 26 meter high gilded statue of the Megjid Janraisag Buddha. Your tour also takes you to the Chingis Khan monument on the Chingis Khaan square and visit the Museum of Mongolian National History – the museum presents Mongolian history and culture from prehistoric times to the present day. Then we visit  the Zaisan memorial hill to get a view of the city. In the evening enjoy traditional folklore concert and have a farewell dinner.  Overnight stay at hotel. (B,L,D)
